government cheese certainly used to be good, back in the late '70s and early '80s when i was a recipient of such. basic orange cheese, but far better than any commercial "American cheese". came in solid 2-pound blocks (like Velveeta) or in pre-sliced 2-pound packages.

government peanut butter, on the other hand (yes, the government artificially inflates the price of peanuts^W^W^W^W^W^Whas price supports for peanut farmers, too), was the sorriest excuse for peanut butter i ever had the misfortune to eat. it was greyish-brown and came in #10 cans. fortunately, most of my contact with that was through the school lunch program, and i could always find someone willing to trade a peanut butter & jelly sandwich for some actual food.

know nothing about it personally, but it's been said it's good eating.
