Go away, spammers

Posted January 31st, 2006 at 7:05 pm by Jay Maynard

I got tired of moderating away comments posted by a rather persistent spammer flogging a diet pill. The site has always been set to hold for moderation any comments with too many links, and so the spam was never actually seen by anyone but me (and possibly Howard). Now, any comment with the name of that particular often-spammed diet pill will simply be refused.

And now, to forcibly drag this post on-topic…

Note that I spelled it “spam”, not “SPAM”. The latter is a registered trademark of Hormel Foods Corporation, which has been remarkably clueful as corporations go about its use on the net: basically, as long as you make sure not to use the capitalized form, they don’t have much problem with its use to describe the scourge of the Internet. I believe that those of us on the net should honor their wishes.

The canned meat product that’s the subject of the trademark is not one of my favorite foods, but I might get a can, chop it up into little bits, and try it on a chupaqueso.

There. How’s that for trying valiantly to stay close to the actual topic? Or should I give up and just post a picture of the latest chocolate and jalapeno creation?

Thank you for differentiating between the two. SPAM is good, espesially since it involes pork.

typically this sort of thing is done with an automated program - I cut my wordpress spam down *significantly* by adding a captcha-style plugin to verify comments. people with accounts get to bypass that.
there are a half-dozen out there - contact me off-site for specific links if you want them.

Chris — that’d be great. Jay’s the install guy, though, so I’ll let him respond.

(But doing it for my other blog is something I could do.)

The only problem with Capcha programs is that they’re particularly inacessable for the blind. But, hey, for a webcomic artist, that’s a minimal problem, eh?

My two all-time favorite programs for anti-spam (and anti-worry, since they’re both pretty much foolproof and require almost no intervention on the part of the admin) are Spam Karma and Akismet There. I’ve gone and gotten myself moderated.

Spam Karma runs on your own machine and evaluates each comment’s, uh, karma and, based on how many spam-like qualities it has. Too many spam words, or indications that it was entered by a machine, and the comment gets sent to hades, never to be seen again. If Spam Karma can’t tell, it sends it to Purgatorio, to be tortured by admin moderator daemons before being sent to its final resting place.

Akismet is run by the Wordpress people, and evaluates the text of each comment by comparing it to a database of all the other comments it’s ever processed. Based on how much it has in common with other spam and non-spam comments, it gets put in a like category. Akismet comes installed on WP 2.0 and up, but you’ve got to have an API key, which you can only get by signing up for an additional blog on WordPress.com. (Which somebody ought to do anyway instead of messing with that nasty old LiveJornal…)

    My 2 cents

Hey, I happen to like LJ, for two reasons: 1) My friends are all on there, and 2) it’s a service that I don’t have to do anything but use: no administration, no maintenance,…

I’ll probably give Akismet and Spam Karma a try pretty soon. For me, captcha programs have an additional disadvantage: they require graphics support libraries that may or may not be present on the host I use, and which I may or may not be able to install.

Jay: this is true. (the graphics libraries thing)
keep forgetting that not everybody owns their host.
(I really shouldn’t forget that since everyone tells me I need to just buy a hosting account…)

    Sigh…
Fine. Stick with your messy old LJ. Just remember, I don’t do anything with LiveJournal because I don’t want another weblog.

So you should get another weblog… :)

Personally I find SPAM great as long as it’s grilled. Growing up in the Alaska Bush, SPAM and Sailor Boy Pilot Bread were about the only foods you could consistently count on (other than vile boat eggs, yeck).
